The thing that aggravated me the most about Drift 1 was collecting good quality sounds and where to collect them. When I was collecting the sounds I just felt like I was constantly collecting sounds that were repeating themselves. I felt that my sounds weren’t really unique, and I was getting frustrated because when it came to editing the sounds I felt that I was constantly using the same ones. As far as the locations, I guess I was frustrated in this area because I noticed that everyone was getting sounds that seemed to be in peaceful areas, or were in very busy areas. Because I don’t have a car, I felt kind of stranded, and since I am not from Milwaukee I felt unsure of the idea of walking all the way down to Brady Street, or record sounds in that area.
I felt most at ease when I found out from my T.A. that my sounds were clear. I had always had self-doubts that they weren’t clear and that they were muffled because of the process of making the microphones. After my T.A. said I had clear sounds I was happy because then I felt I just had to edit the sounds and I didn’t have to take numerous sound walks. I also felt at ease once I a dominant location. I may have used some of the areas around campus, but they weren’t exactly on campus and they did have a lot of commotion going on. I liked that a lot, and then just felt I had to do the recordings. The other part I felt strongly at ease is when I was putting images on the computer that were taken with the camera. That was a great sigh of relief because I knew I did well with that.
Some of the surprises that occurred included timing, the short sound clips and issues with google maps. The timing in my opinion was alright, but when I was doing the whole assignment, it just felt like things were rushed and put together so quickly. When I look back at the assignment and all the stuff that we had to do and the amount of time we had for it, it seems like it was appropriate. Of course when I was actually doing the assignments, it seemed like it always took longer. I felt like things were taking double the time if not triple sometimes. The one that took the most was either collecting sounds, or using the audacity program. We won’t go any deeper than that. The sound clips also were to short and this was bad. I always thought I had too long of clips, and I remember the professor stating that we should always take longer sound clips then what we were assuming we would need. Well I felt that I was doing that well, and then when I came back and saw them on audacity, I just felt that they were way to short. I will have to take longer ones. Lastly, there were a few problems with google maps. I remember seeing the tutorial and tried following them as close as I could, but there was a couple of things that I had to call people from the class about, since I got a bit lost. This slowed me down, and I felt kind of stupid about this because I have used google map before, and thought I knew what I was doing too.
The exciting parts of this assignment had to have been getting everything finally put together. I mean, I liked doing the recordings once I figured out how the mini-disk player worked, and I did enjoy working with audacity, once I learned properly how to use it more, but finally putting stuff on the blogger was the most exciting part of this assignment. I just felt like I had succeeded a very hard task, in my opinion, and having the actual work put online made me feel very very happy.
